My girls are quite the students. They really exceed my expectations at every turn. They are smarter than I can possibly understand. They have such tender, compassionate hearts. They are wonderful students and friends. I am inspired by them daily. It is becoming more and more of a reality that they will soon leave home and start the next portion of their lives. That thought reaches up and catches me off guard often these days.

The girls have been working so hard, the school work load, taking up a new sport, developing friendships, and trying to enjoy a little fun. The way things have been going, not much time for fun. So I decided to surprise them. When I picked them up from school on Friday, I told them the big surprise.

We made a quick trip to OKC for the Taylor Swift concert. It was a last minute purchase of a sold out concert. We literally sat in the very TOP row. I don't think a single seat was vacant. It was wonderful. The concert was fabulous. The time with my girls, even more fabulous!

We stayed at a hotel downtown, went to see the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial, something I have wanted to do for so long. It was very moving. I didn't realize that my girls had not learned about this tragedy before our trip. It seems like it was just yesterday. The memorial was special.

I hope that this weekend is one that my girls will remember for many years to come.

Best friends

There is just something about having a great friend. Someone who really "gets you." It is the way they know what you are gonna say or do before you even know it yourself. It is knowing that someone looks forward to seeing you and spending time with you.

A best friend is hard to find. That makes it even more special when you find one. And if for some reason, you can't talk to your best friend, it feels like part of you is missing. Almost as if things can't really happen in your life if you can't share them with your best friend.

Twins have such a great deal.... from the moment of conception, they are hanging out with their best friend. The connection that they have, being with their best friend all the time. Every birthday, every first day of school, every bedtime, every first that comes.... they have each other. But the challenging part is finding other people to be their friend. It seems that people find it hard to be close friends with twins. I am guilt of it as a mom, its ok for one friend to come over, but not two at the same time.... Anyway... my twins have been blessed with a best friend. Kayla loves them. They are three peas in a pod. For many Halloweens they have all three dressed up together as the same thing. They spend many nights together on the phone, on skype (even though they live 7 miles apart), and sleepovers. These girls love one another.

When I see the way they laugh together, appreciate the likes and quirks of one another, and share dreams together, I am so grateful to God for blessing my girls with the friendship they have with Kayla. I call her my " almost daughter" because that is what she is to us. We love her and appreciate her friendship to our girls.

Run for the Sand!

We recently took the time to try something new. Our family took an extra long weekend and went to the beach on an April weekend. Usually we go to the beach in the summer, but this was a nice change of pace. We were really excited to attend Sandfest for the first time ever. I don't think we were prepared for the changes that Port A has gone through since we were last there. So many more things there now. I heard reports that 100,000 people would be on the beach for Sandfest. Another plus, my sister and her family were there vacationing on the island with her in laws. That was such an added treat. My niece was very excited to participate in the sand castle competition this year. It was great to see her build her seashell village. She even won second place and received a trophy. The kids all enjoyed the jumbo corn dogs for sale on the beach. The live music was perfect for the little ACE, he was a dancing fool. It was fantastic to see my sister and how great she looks as the baby boy grows inside of her. We are excited to meet him this summer. Another thing about this trip that was new for us, wildflowers.... we never time a road trip well. Usually the wildflowers are not quite ready or have already peaked. They were wonderful. The sandcastles were truly remarkable. It was a nice weekend.

It doesn't matter how old the boy is... he still tortures the seagulls.

There's a break in the weather....

I am so ready for summer. The relaxed pace, the warm sunshine, the cookouts and water toys are all a part of my favorite time of the year. The snow has been nice, but clearly I live in Texas for a reason. Anyway... the girls were feeling like a new profile photo for face book, so away we went.

I am always amazed at how beautiful my daughters are. I am sure you will agree....

Adoption made me proud

Well, It happened. My little guy turned 10 today. I can hardly believe he is ten years old. When we saw his sweet face... that quiet little two year old boy.... was small and fragile. His eyes were full of stories, and his mouth held only a few words. We honestly wondered if he was human.... because he was absolutely perfect. The first two years of his life were full of circumstances and situations that no child should ever have to experience. The lessons that he learned in those two years left scars that may never heal. Hard to believe that experiences that a child has before they are three years old have such an impact on their life, but sometimes it happens that way.

I have always been inspired by adoption. I know it is a story that weaves in and out of the lives of many people I know, and those that I don't know at all. Each story different in its own way. Our story is perhaps like many others. Complications with the delivery of my twin girls, five years earlier, resulted in a hysterectomy. I was blessed to escape the operating room alive. And as the time approached for the twins to start school..... the yearning took hold. I needed, I wanted, I longed for another child. I prayed and prayed and cried and begged God to bless us with a son. We fostered seven boys over the course of three years, all in hopes of adopting a son or two. The joy as each child entered our home, paired with the devastation of their departure was almost enough to destroy me. When we received the phone call about our boy... I couldn't allow myself to accept that what I had prayed for was about to happen.

This boy, was mine. This boy, was the one I prayed for. God had heard. God had answered my prayer. When we stood in that courtroom to finalize the adoption, I felt a peace. This amazing boy, was mine.

Things do not come easy for my boy. He struggles in school and still bears some of the "scars" from those two years before I saw his face. But I can say this. The old soul, the little "jesus" that I see in his eyes..... has the power to teach me.

Adoption changed my life. Adoption gave me my boy.

Mr. J has been wanting glasses for two years. He finally got the school nurse to do a vision screening to convince me he needed them. I have to admit... he does look darling in them. Today was his turn for his own portrait session. He lasted about 30 min. I knew I already had some good shots... so we turned the car toward the house. He is the boy... and we love him.

Well, after feeling crummy for so long.... I decided this Saturday it would be great to have a family outing that consisted of something other than a trip to Walmart or to eat. I saw this video on the Star-Telegram's website of new trails opened up at Eagle Mountain Lake Park. I thought it might be a great adventure. The kids seem to enjoy hiking and exploring when they go to camp, so why not.... I thought the chance to take my camera along might prove to be a creative opportunity as we explored the area around the lake. So after looking like the day was going to be a wash, we got a late start, but nevertheless.... we did make the trip. This is a long post... but I couldn't pick just a few favorites....

The colors found in nature are often so vibrant. this rock has the perfect shade of green moss.

The view was fantastic.... the energy it took to get to this point... well, let me say we were all wiped out and ready to quit.

This was one of those moments like you see in the movies... where the trail opens up into a clearing of sorts and it is breath taking.... I loved the way the trees all curved as the domed ceiling of a special room deep in the woods. I did lay down on the trail to get the perspective I wanted.... I think the two guys that passed us thought I was hurt....

As fall begins to lightly dust the leaves with color, I am blown away by how beautiful the leaves are... each leaf has its own pattern and beauty.

I was captivated by the pattern of the lichen growing on the side of this tree. It reminded me of light and delicate frosted flakes.

The grasses were hypnotic as they swayed in the gentle breeze.

And try as I may...... I always end up photographing my children. They are always my favorite subject.

A nice man offered to take our family photo, he actually did a good job... although he acted like he had never used a camera before.

The signs as we entered the park illustrated the animals that we would likely see on our hike.... but this little man.... never was quiet long enough to see anything. He scared everything away.

A Presentation and a peek at the beach

Well the presentation in Houston wasn't exactly what I expected. I was told the room held 150.... and in actuality... 20 came! Oh well. My presentation was compelling and interesting. Just ask Scott... he decided to come along on this trip. My mom was so wonderful to keep my kids... even with dad out of town. My friend Christi helped with my dogs... and away we went. The presentation was over around 2:30 and we took our chance and shot down 45 to Galveston. Normally we don't get the chance to see the beach but once a year. This was a quick afternoon. I did get to feel the toes in the water...the toes in the sand... and hear the waves crash around me. There is no sound that equals.

Dinner at Landry's. I really loves eating dinner while looking at the waves roll in one after another.

Scott was maybe the quietest on this trip than I ever remember him being... very reflective and quiet.... what's up with that?

These remind me of the damage that this area had as a result of hurricane IKE just one year ago. There are so many reminders of the strong waves and high wind and water. I thought they were a reminder that the sea is living and breathing.... with rises and falls..... chaos and peace.

Everytime.... the patterns in the sand as the waves lap against the shore.... it just amazes me.

I always love to see a bird, just a bit different from the rest. And watch them search for the next little tiny fish.

Wow.... it is all we could say.... and imagine.... how that water must have been so powerful....

Even though we were only on the sand for an hour or so...... it refreshed my soul. It only took a few moments and the stress of work and health and all of my thoughts and fears.... melted away.... and It was just me and the sea....

I hope to see my good friend again soon. It is shame we only get together once a year... in summer.... maybe i need to visit the sea more often.

Madison and Payten indulged me.... the sunset was beautiful. We were on our way home and I caught a glimpse of a gorgeous sunset. I rushed home, told the girls to throw on something cute..... and get back in the car. Of course... by the time we got back to the locations I wanted... the sun had already dropped beyond the horizon. (Just as Madi said it would) I still took a few shots before we left. I kind of like them too!

The boy and his chair.... I was amazed as I watched my nephew work so hard to sit in, stand in, chew on, straddle, lay on.... his little chair. I couldn't resist... I found a spot on the floor and tried to catch some of the obsession in action. I love it!

A nice relaxing Sunday afternoon photo shoot.... NOT! Hotter than you can imagine. Sweat rolling off our skin as the girls tried to look pretty and catch the light for the camera. I think all things considered... their beauty shines through.

During a recent photo shoot with my girls... Madison and Payten took a turn with the camera. IT is interesting to see how they capture images as a form of art. Like anyone holding a new piece of technology, they were overwhelmed at first. I think they begin to see as an artist. I am so proud of both of them. They have this natural approach to life as artists, looking at the world around them through a frame. Wonder where they got that?

Happy Mother's Day

Well this year, my family made me cry. I always feel appreciated by my kids and husband to some degree. that being said, it is always good when Mother's Day rolls around and my family takes time to specifically think about me and thank me.

Sometimes it is a handwritten card,

Other times an orginal painting,

Occasionally a piece of jewlery.

Each year, I feel like the luckiest mom in the world. My kids are so beautiful and smart and well behaved. They all three have trusted in Christ, the most important decision they will ever make. I am truly blessed.

But on this same day that I feel so loved and blessed, a empty spot in my heart.... becomes apparent. You see, Scott and I served as foster parents prior to adopting our son. We were parents to seven little boys before Jayden became ours. And on mother's day.... I think of how this mother... foster mother... misses those precious boys. I remember all of the firsts that they expereinced with us, the hurt and the pain that the tiniest little guys had to deal with so early in their lives. I remember the way their little faces were so unsure of what was happening as they were brought into our home. I remember in detail, each story of how they came to be my son. I feel the loss all over again. I think of how old they would be today.... how they might look... how they are doing in school... and I close my eyes and feel.... how it felt to hold them and know God placed them in my arms for that time. I know that God appointed the days that they were my boys... he had a purpose and a plan. I feel blessed all over again... to have loved them... for how ever many days, months that God gave us. And then I resolve.... they are my children. They do not all live with me, or remember me.... but they will be my boys forever.

I have also been blessed my two other children, althought they are much older. Jennifer and Nick came into our lives during our fist year of marriage. They became our family. Their mother welcomed us into her world and honored us with her trust. We have lived together and apart. These grown kids still call Scott dad, and although they had a great mom already.... I have been blessed to be a "second mom" for these exceptional kids. Jennifer has married a wonderful man, Erik, and adopted two babies through foster care. I don't know if she realizes exactly how proud i am of her. Nick is such a handsome and smart man, still finding his way. I don't get to see him or talk to him much, but I love him always.

So the point of all of this....

She was really dead set against pony tails... but when I told her that Breleigh, her cousin, wears them, she was up for it. She is going to Colorado to see her cousins in a week. She is very excited.

I encourage you to stop over and see how they are progressing in their ministry. Well anyway, she posted the funniest story about her little girl. It is so funny, I had to share it with you.... I laughed and laughed and laughed. I read it to Scott and really enjoyed the deep belly laugh that it brought out of him. Too fun.

Crazy White People in Africa

You know, I've always heard that a child is never too young to learn about Jesus. Hmm.....

You have to picture my daughter, Cambree. She has HUGE blue eyes and a complete poker face. She gets her "wide-eyed, serious as a heart attack" face on when she is thinking about something serious. Then, she will get right in your face to tell you what she wants to say.

When I tucked her in last night, I told her, "Cambree, you go to sleep. Do you remember what's going to happen to you if you get out of bed?" (answer: spanking)

Her eyes got so big as she looked up at me seriously and whispered, "I'm gonna die on a cross."

I find myself not understanding why he does the things he does. Boys are so very strange to me. Although I don't understand him, I do love him. He has a way with my heart.

Madi, Pay and Bailey are always a laugh a minute. NO Homework days are no exception. Their quick wit and goofy sense of humor is instant healing for my tired and weary heart after a long day. I love hanging out with them, (when they let me) and listening to the radio and hearing about the drama of the day. You girls..... make me happy to be me! Thanks for letting me love you!

Spring, a time for new things

Spring is the time of year that we can see the changes that have been in the works for those cold winter months. I love that. It seems like one day the trees and shrubs are dead and lifeless. The next morning, new growth in many colors is bursting through the dark safety of the shrub. That image is so miraculous. The new growth insipres us to try something new, or simply start doing what we love again. Sometimes we need reminders, to be fresh and new, to open our eyes and see all of the colors, all of the beauty. The other thing I love about new growth..... the old stuff, the foundation remains. The new growth finds its place among the old creating a fuller, healthier plant. I really love that.

Meet my Granny. I am so excited that we are going to Oklahoma to see her on April 11th. She will be turning 90 years old. She is still a character.

Jayden was such a little guy, so sweet and cute. It is so hard to believe how big he is now. I swear he is going to eat me out of house and home.

Scott always finds unique opportunities for having fun. This photo was taken during our summer vacation.... evacuation. A hurricane ran us out of Port Aransas and sent us south to South Padre.

Payten was so proud to show us the yellow ribbons they tied around the trees at her school for the troops. She was in second grade. Doesn't seem that long ago.

Madison always finds a way to climb the trees. I loved dressing the girls when they were little. Those cute little hair buns are long gone. I miss those days.

Ok, this is getting old

I posted earlier that i was hospitalized for a week due to an infection in my leg. I left the hospital after 6 luxurious days and remained in bed for another week at home. I managed to work this past week and return home each night with zero energy. So as much as I hate it, Spring Break is an opportunity for me to rest and recapture my energy level. Except....... the swelling is lingering. My doctor referred me to an infectious disease specialist to make sure we are treating everything there is to treat because the swelling should be gone by now. So yesterday I went to this doctor. It was very clear that lots of serious infection people come there. Another issue that became apparent, many indigent patients are treated by this doctor. I felt very out of place. The doctor was fantastic. She prescribed two antibiotics for the next two weeks. Yes, if you are listening close.... I have been on antibiotics for a full month. These are not child's play antibiotics either, they are the big guns.... Anyway, one of the drugs I have taken already and finished it a week prior. The other drug was a new one for me. And what fun it was..... this morning... RASH.... over entire body. Are you kidding me? An allergic reaction to the new antibiotic..... Can I get a break? So needless to say.... I am miserable. Will I be well again? Will I feel like me again? Will I ever have my energy back? I guess I could look at the positives, I still have my leg. My doctor tells me on my follow up visit, "I was just trying to save your leg. I really thought I was going to have to remove part of it......" Holy Cow....... Thank You Lord for Dr. Vu and how he threw his whole self into saving my leg. I kind of like having two of them.

I am amazed by my baby brother, Chance. He is such a great man. I remember the day he was born. I was 13. I was so embarrassed that my parents had "done it" and were having yet another baby. At 13 I had a good idea of how he came to be. I was determined to be at the hospital when he was born. As my Dad and I went back to see the new baby boy, (dad did not select to be in the delivery room) I saw this big bouncing baby boy... with a squished up face looking at us. My immediate response.... "He is kind of funny looking." Having never seen a fresh baby, I was not prepared for how "cheesy" and wrinkled they come out. My dad was great... "He looks exactly like you did." That was it, I loved him at once. For so many years, the large age difference kept me so tall and him so small. I don't really remember when it happened, but he outgrew me. He just kept growing until her was 6 foot tall. Suddenly he forgot he was my baby brother. He was off to games and practice and friend's houses. Then he moved off to college and got married and grew up. I will admit that the day that he got his driver license, I cried. I can't explain it. Maybe the fact that he was growing up, meant I was getting old.... it was painful. Once upon a time, he was my baby brother and he needed me. Now that he is older, he needs his big sister very little. He is a husband to a fantastic Lindsay, a coach to the Cedar Hills Varsity Girls Soccer Team, a fantastic classroom manager in Biology, IPC, or Chemistry, a loyal friend, a loving brother, a son that makes his parents proud. I am very proud of how he has become a fabulous man.

Let me introduce you to another fabulous man..... or at least one that sings the songs my ears were made to hear....

After spending five "luxurious" nights in a sixth floor condo at Huguley Hospital, I am being released! I cant wait to shower and walk around with out the leash (iv pole) dragging along behind me. I cannot tell you how happy Scott is to be out of the "bob sled" bed.

I am sick....I have been sick since Friday.... I hate being stuck in bed. I have a strep bacterial infection in my leg. Talk about fast moving. In a span of 12 hours the infection spread from my foot to my thigh. Needless to say, I was hospitalized for IV antibiotic treatment on Saturday. Today is Tuesday... and it looks like Friday is the soonest i will be released. I have gone from not being able to walk at all... with more pain than childbirth... to mild pain and swelling. I do not recommend this to anyone. I have been blessed to have my Scott with me here at the hospital. I don't like staying alone. IT seems so open and in front of everyone when they open the door to your room. The rooms are really like closets. My mom and my dad have been such a help, staying with my kids and being the taxi and food service. I could not imagine having to do this without them. Scott's parents also came to help. I know that it was a sacrifice for them to come and they gladly drove in to help a few days. My kids are doing OK. Once they knew i was not having surgery to remove flesh eating bacteria.... they seem totally fine. They are super kids. I am so blessed. And so many of my friends and family and even coworkers..... have all stopped in to see me and ask how i am doing. It is so nice to feel the love from so many people. Needless to say, I am stir crazy.......

The worst part about this year's celebration was that my sister and her family were not able to be here with us. The best part about this year's celebration was that my sister and her family joined us this year through webcam and skype..... What a blessing.

We had a great time being together and exchanging gifts. Children are always the most fun to watch open gifts. My niece, Kate, made sure to help everyone open their gifts. My nephew, Will, smiled and enjoyed opening presents at his very first Christmas. My three young ones were so grown up and respectful as they made sure to thank each person and show real appreciation for the gift. I was so proud of their behavior. I always love watching each person open their gifts... gifts that I spent time thinking about them and choosing something that they might enjoy. I like to see if I chose wisely... if they really like the gift... did I choose something that they really had not thought about needing or wanting? It is always fun for me.

My parents bought me the coolest reflector for taking photos. I wanted one and they did a great job selecting the right one. I can't wait to try it out. My sister... wow... she really surprised me. I have always know she was talented.... but she has started a business with a friend where they make silver hand stamped jewelry. She made me a beautiful necklace. I absolutely love it. I love it more that she made it for me. I am so proud of her....

This year... Scott and I decided for the first time to refrain from purchasing gifts from one another..... let me just say now.... bad idea.... I did not know how much I would miss having him select something just for me.... no matter how small or large..... i missed that.

I am so proud that my kids are so easy to please. They are totally happy with whatever they are given. That is a great thing.

Christmas was extra hard this year.... but you would never have known it. My dad was laid off from Radio Shack after almost 30 years.... in a time where we should have forgone gifts... they still gave. I am so proud of the way that my parents are handling this crisis. They are trusting that God has things under control. He will show them how He will provide for them in this hard time. I am so blessed by such great parents.

I pray that your Christmas has been as much a blessing as mine has been.

Scott's parents are coming tomorrow. We look forward to more time with them.

Between perfection and Disaster

Someone recently pointed out that my blog makes it seem like my life is perfect. Far from it... my life is a constant flux between incredible moments... many that I don't even notice... and near disaster.... sometime all the way to disaster. I have people in my life that are able to break my fall sometimes and other times I have to learn things on my own.

Little Cabin in the Woods

Our 17th Anniversary getaway was incredible. We stayed at Trickle Creek Cabins in Chaulk Mountain, Texas. I found them on the internet... a treasure. We stayed in the cabin called Morning Glory. It was absolutely perfect.
The creek... it is fed by a spring... one of the two springs in the area. It is truly just a trickle...

Our cabin was just a stone's throw away from the hot tub cabana.... see it in the oak trees on the right... It was fabulous. Sitting in the hot tub, looking at the sun set over the landscape was so relaxing. Out the front door of our cabin was the pond. The water level was down pretty far, but it was so still and calming.

The horses were so pretty. We had the fortune of being there at feeding time one afternoon. Mr. Mackey fed the horses, cats and the wild turkeys he raises. It was really cool to be so close to a wild turkey. They are really big birds. Scott is not a horse lover... but I think he even liked these horses.

We had an exceptional time exploring the 160 acres on the property. It was truly a peaceful time for both of us. We took the camera along to capture some of the images that moved us. I shot this one of Scott while he wasn't looking... I love it. It really felt like we were the only people in the world for the time we were there. It was what each of us needed. We will never forget our time at Trickle Creek Cabins. Thank you to my parents. We could not have gone and been so relaxed if we did not know that our kids were going to be taken care of so well. You do so much for us. We cannot thank you enough.

Ode to my mother

My mom, is an awesome lady. She has been there for me always. She taught me how to be assertive as a woman and be heard. She taught me how to listen to the heart of what someone was truly saying. She made sure that I internalized the"remember who you are and where you came from" as an automatic thought daily. She taught me to always give my best. She taught me that family is sometimes all you have... but then they are all you need. She loved me through times when I thought I knew it all, and clearly did not... and times that I thought I did not have a clue... when the answer was with me all along. Mom developed a great "should" attitude in my life that makes me look at the needs of others even when I have needs of my own. She sets high expectations and I always try to meet them. Mom loves with persistence, teaching us give our whole hearts to those we love. Mom pushed me to be my personal best. In a world that often shirks responsibility to limits personal effort and accountability, mom teaches us to do what is right, no matter what it takes to do it. She is quite the lady.

If you have read my facebook, you know the struggle I am going through to get motivated to clean my house. I just can't seem to get motivated. I would rather edit photos, sleep, pretty much anything else.... just not clean. My commitment this week is to break the cycle... to just do it. Let's see if I can do it. Today marks the 38th wedding anniversary of my parents today. They have been a real life example of love for me and my siblings. While we all dream of the fairy tale, with happily ever after, not very many people find a love that meets that fantasy. What my parents have found is something so much more than that fairy tale. They have weathered storms of all sizes. Times with money, times without money, times with family near, times without family at all, times with plenty and times with nothing at all. Through it all, they remain committed to one another and the family they have built together. While sometimes they wonder if their children have learned anything from them,they have been the standard, that we all have held each relationship to ove r the years while we looked for our spouse. Lauren and I looked for a man like our daddy, who was strong and committed to our family, that did whatever it took to provide and love us. Who looked beyond our flaws and loved us in spite of them. Josh and Change both found women that shared the same confidence, fierce protection and love for their family that mom taught us. We are blessed to have such a wonderful example of love. This is my grandmother's niece from California. We have been so blessed to see her again this week. She is a neat lady. She lives alone as one of the most independent ladies I have ever met. She always has some great story about her adventures to complete some task all by herself. That red hair and made up face have always been her trademark. I feel so blessed to have these images of her that capture the true joy and love of life that Vivian shares with all of those she meets. My nanny really loved her Vivian. I know that she misses my nanny too.

A new vision

I am so excited. I am learning how to take better photos with my new camera. Every time I get a once in a lifetime shot, it is like a worship experience for me. I am in awe of how God, our creator, has such creativity and craftsmanship as he created each one of us so differently. I feel privileged to hold this camera and capture the joy, pain, laughter or love that each person expresses through their actions. I can't help but say, thank you Lord with each click of the shutter. I am really excited about a vision that God gave me tonight about a new area of service for me using my camera. I will fill you in after Scott and I have prayed through all of the details. I am pumped!

I went to Kerrville with my sister, Lauren, baby Ace and Breleigh this past weekend. We were going for a shower to celebrate the adoption of Jennifer and Erik's babies, Isaac and Hadleigh. They are such a blessing. Zizi, that's me, loves them so much. I have loved watching them grow and learn so many firsts. I look forward to watching them grow into beautiful toddlers and beyond.

I spent a good part of Columbus day grooming my dogs. The puppy was freaked out by the entire party. Look how Eloise is growing!
